Sign: put this on the table
This is not a pledge to implement UBI tomorrow. It is a lower and harder-to-refuse ask: while AI visibly reshapes employment, governments owe the public a costed, published, debated income-security plan.
The full statement
We do not ask any government to implement universal basic income tomorrow. We ask for four things that are considerably lower, and considerably harder to refuse:
-
Publish the costings. Governments should publish, with reviewable assumptions and open data, the cost, funding and distributional effects of income-security options — including but not limited to universal basic income, negative income tax and conditional transfers — under scenarios in which AI measurably reshapes employment.
-
Publish the monitoring. Establish and publish statistics on AI and employment changes, disaggregated by age and occupation, with attention to hiring. Distinguish structural changes from aggregate changes, and correlation from causation.
-
Debate it in public, on the evidence, rather than leaving the question to marketing slogans and doom. Supporters must stop saying "just tax the AI companies"; opponents must stop substituting "it pays people to be lazy" for engagement with the evidence.
-
Run the experiments first. Before any full implementation, run large pilots with control groups, pre-registered analysis plans, independent evaluation, and a binding commitment to publish results whatever they show. What happened to the Ontario pilot — cancelled mid-flight, results never known — should not happen again.
Signing does not mean you support UBI. It means you think the question deserves a public, evidence-based hearing before it becomes a crisis. People who oppose UBI can sign too — if the costings show it does not work, that is precisely the outcome opponents want on the record.
